The Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, is San Antonio and South Texas’ only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center. The Mays Cancer Center has been serving San Antonio and South Texas since 1974 and has been an NCI-designated Cancer Center since 1991.
The Mays Cancer Center’s Institute for Drug Development (IDD) was founded in 1991 as the research arm of what was then called the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC). The IDD has been at the forefront of developing new cancer drugs for decades, with approximately 20 drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cancer treatment. The program offers patients the opportunity to receive drugs that are only available here and that might not become available to cancer patients elsewhere for several years.
In 2017, Mays Cancer Center became one of a select few centers in the nation partnering with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
